If you're going to be relocating all the way across the country to Augusta, Georgia, you want to make sure that the same home health services and public services you enjoyed in your previous home will be available to you in Augusta as well. Obviously we can't compare the two, as we have no idea where you're coming from, but we can give you an overview of the services available in Augusta so that you can make sure your needs will be met. This isn't a comprehensive list, but it covers the most important facets.
Health Care
As you should be aware already, health care in the United States is not government run. In Canada a child could be treated at the ADHD Toronto clinic or one in Halifax, or Vancouver depending on what sort of care they needed. Here you're more likely to bind yourself to a particular hospital through an HMO, or private health care insurance provider. Augusta has six hospitals, Doctors, Georgia Regional, the Specialty Hospital, St. Joseph's, University, and Walton Rehab, plus the clinics run by the medical college of Georgia. Between them they cover almost all disciplines of medicine.
Parks and Recreation
There are more then 60 parks, swimming pools, golf courses, playgrounds, trails, lakes, camps, and sporting fields in the city of Augusta that are maintained by the city for public use. Programs run by the city at public recreation centers cover a range of interest and activity levels, from proper handling of industrial water treatment chemicals and first aid to youth sports and summer day camps for kids. Information on programs and registration instructions can be found online at the city's official website.
Emergency Services
All core emergency services: ambulance, fire, police, and poison control can be reached via a single number: 9-1-1. This system is standard across North America, so you don't have to worry about adjusting. In addition to these services the city also maintains a department of emergency management which is poised to deal with any crisis that may crop up: terrorism, floods, even large scale explosions or blackouts that may render your instantaneous water heater offline.
Public Works
Everyday maintenance, prevention, and construction are handled by the city public works department. They're in charge of zoning, so your neighbor can't suddenly decide to open a factory. They handle repairs on your street, putting up traffic signs, managing the water supply, carting away the trash, and assessing your taxes. They'd even handle escaped animals from a veterinarian clinic in London, Ontario.
